Thomas Tuchel sets big target for Chelsea this season

Thomas Tuchel has set his Chelsea players a big target for the end of this season: to deliver a trophy.

The new Blues boss says there’s ‘no time to waste’ at Stamford Bridge and he is confident he can land silverware in his first six months in charge.

Tuchel, the former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain manager, admitted that the Premier League title is beyond his side, who are eighth in the table and 11 points behind leaders Manchester City, but still expects success in the FA Cup and Champions League.

Chelsea take on Barnsley in the fifth round of the FA Cup, while they take on La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League.

But Tuchel is confident his side are a force to be reckoned with and are capable of winning both trophies.

‘We have to be ready to compete,’ said Tuchel. ‘Chelsea is the club where you compete for trophies and there is no time to waste. As a manager there is no time to waste.

‘Honestly, now we compete for the FA Cup, we will get ready to absolutely compete at the highest level in the Champions League.

‘We want to create a team that is absolutely no fun to play against and we want to create a team that is confident enough to beat anybody in two games, which is possible, and from latest, the start of next season we want to be ready to close the gap to Man City, Liverpool.

‘I’m very realistic. I’m at a club whose DNA it is to win and go for trophies.

‘I’m here to challenge for every trophy we play for in the competitions. That means that, yes, realistically this year it’s the Champions League and the FA Cup.

‘To speak now about the Premier League title, there are too many teams in between us so this is not realistic this season. We will lose the focus if we start here.

‘But our job is about relations within the club and with the team, and to push everyone to the limit.

‘Success is also to make the stadium happy. People should be excited to come to Stamford Bridge, excited to watch our team.

‘People should be excited and feel the team playing with a special energy and atmosphere. These are also the soft points of success.

‘But in the end, at Chelsea you play for trophies and titles.’
